Downes’ slam highlight of Mudcats’ 8-2 loss
Brandon Downes bashed a grand slam and three Wilmington pitchers combined to hold the Mudcats to four singles as the Blue Rocks beat Carolina 8-2 Friday night.
Downes 2nd homer of the season came in the third inning off Mudcats starter and loser Matt Whitrow (1-4). Following a single and errors by Whitrow and Reed Harper that loaded the bases, Downes put the Blue Rocks in front 4-0 with a shot to left center.
Whitrow lasted four innings, charged with five runs, only three earned, on 4 hits.
Wilmington added a run in the fourth and three more in the fifth off reliever Raymar Navarro. Wender Franco tripled in a run. Austin Bailey and Alfredo Escalera had rbi singles.
Blue Rocks starter Josh Staumont walked in two runs in the 4th, accounting for Carolina’s offense. He walked six in four innings of work. Jake Newberry (1-0) went three scoreless innings in relief to earn the win. Mark McCoy finished up to seal the win.
The Blue Rocks (12-28) have won two of their last three games. The Mudcats (16-24) have lost six of their last seven.
