IronPigs come back to sweep Durham Bulls
The Durham Bulls dropped the finale of a three-game set Sunday evening at the DBAP, as the Lehigh Valley IronPigs scored once in the ninth inning and twice in the 10th for a 3-2 win.
Down to their final out, the IronPigs (45-32) tied the contest on an opposite-field single by Nick Williams to score Emmanuel Burriss. Then in the 10th the visitors scored twice more, as Cam Perkins scored on a groundout and Logan Moore tallied an RBI double for a 3-1 lead.
In the bottom of the 10th the Bulls pushed Lehigh Valley to the edge, as Taylor Featherston committed an error at third base with the bases loaded to make it a 3-2 game. On the very next play, though, Featherston started a 5-4-3 double play to end the game and give the IronPigs a sweep of the three-game set.
The loss spoiled the Triple-A debut of Jake Faria for Durham, who tossed six scoreless innings, struck out six and allowed just two hits. The 22-year-old tallied 82 pitches – 52 for strikes – as he posted his longest scoreless outing since August 2015.
In the first inning the Bulls (34-44) struck for the game’s first run, as Jake Goebbert reached on a two-out error to keep the inning alive. Richie Shaffer followed with a single to center, before JP Arencibia ripped a double down the left-field line to score Goebbert.
Luis Garcia (6-1) earned the victory for Lehigh Valley by recording the final out in the ninth inning, while Edward Mujica earned his 19th save of the campaign despite allowing a run in the 10th. Dylan Floro (1-2) absorbed the loss for the home side, surrendering three runs on six hits in two innings of work.
Shaffer and Daniel Robertson each finished 2-for-5 for the Bulls, as they were the only two to collect multi-hit games in the seven-hit attack. Durham finished the game 2-for-13 with runners in scoring position, while leaving nine men on the bases.
The Bulls open a seven-game road trip Monday with the first game of a three-game set against the Charlotte Knights. RHP Jaime Schultz (5-4, 3.61) takes the mound for the Bulls opposite RHP Anthony Ranaudo (3-2, 2.22) for the Knights. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
