Burks' homer leads Myrtle Beach to 5-1 win over Carolina

Charcer Burks hit a two-run homer in the third inning, leading the Myrtle Beach Pelicans to a 5-1 win over the Carolina Mudcats on Friday.

The home run by Burks scored Tyler Pearson to give the Pelicans a 2-0 lead.

Carolina answered in the next half-inning when J.B. Moss hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Keith Curcio to cut the deficit to one.

The Pelicans later added single runs in the fourth, sixth and seventh innings to secure the victory.

Myrtle Beach right-hander Jonathan Martinez (10-5) picked up a quality start and the win after allowing one run on just four hits over six innings. Opposing starter Enderson Franco (5-9) took the loss in the Carolina League game after giving up five runs and nine hits over 6 2/3 innings.

Myrtle Beach improved to 13-7 against Carolina this season.
