What did CMPD find in LaMelo Ball crash investigation? It’s a secret.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police have released no details about the Feb. 18 car crash involving Charlotte Hornets star player LaMelo Ball and another driver in uptown, leaving many questions unanswered.

Did police interview Ball and the other driver? Were either issued a traffic citation? What caused the crash?

An anonymous police spokesperson declined to answer those questions from The Charlotte Observer this week.

“Because this incident concerns a personal accident, there is limited public information to share other than what was already shared with you prior,” the department spokesperson said by email Wednesday. “There’s nothing further to share regarding this accident.”

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police leaders generally decline to do interviews or take direct questions, referring news media to a police email account in which reporters don’t know who, exactly, with the police department they’re corresponding with.

All previous requests for information and documents have been declined.

In declining to provide a written crash report, the department cited the Federal Driver’s Privacy Protection Act, which prohibits disclosure of some personal information in state DMV records.

Asked if the department would provide a report with that personal information redacted, the department said no.

Video showed Ball’s custom camouflage Hummer colliding with another vehicle.

Video published by WSOC showed Ball getting out of his vehicle and into another after the collision. The Charlotte Observer confirmed that Ball got into teammate Brandon Miller’s vehicle after the crash, and that team security was also on the scene.

Ball was not injured in the crash. MEDIC reported treating one person.

Ball was asked about the car crash at a press conference the next day after a Hornets loss against the Houston Rockets. A reporter asked Ball how he knew the other driver wasn’t hurt in the crash.

“I seen her get straight out the car,” Ball said.

The 24-year-old Ball said he was “blessed” after he was asked about how he felt about the collision.

“God is great,” Ball said.

The Hornets have declined to comment on the crash.
