Panthers will work out former Clemson, Tampa Bay defensive lineman Da’Quan Bowers
Former Clemson and Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive lineman Da’Quan Bowers will work out for the Carolina Panthers, according to a source.
Bowers, an All-American and second-round pick in the 2010 NFL draft, was released by the Buccaneers over the weekend.
Bowers was one of the best pass rushers in college while at Clemson, totaling 15 1/2 sacks in his junior season. But that success didn’t translate to the NFL.
In his four seasons with the Bucs, Bowers totaled seven sacks. Last year he had one sack in 11 games, including two starts.
Bowers, a 6-foot-4, 288-pounder, was one of the nation’s best defensive players when he came out of Bamberg-Ehrhardt High in South Carolina.
Bowers has put on some weight since beginning his career as an edge rusher and began playing more at defensive tackle this preseason with the Bucs. He has battled knee and foot injuries in his career.
It’s unclear where the Panthers would use him if he signs. Panthers general manager Dave Gettleman has said you can never have enough pass rushers, and Carolina could add depth at tackle with Star Lotulelei recovering from a stress reaction to his foot.
