Monday’s opening game of the Carolina Hurricanes’ first-round playoff series against the Boston Bruins was a national TV ratings hit. With 857,000 viewers on ESPN, it was the most-viewed hockey broadcast on cable since opening night and the most-viewed opening game of the NHL playoffs in 20 years.

That doesn’t include local ratings on Bally Sports South in North Carolina or the Bruins broadcast on NESN. Those figures are according to Sports TV News & Updates on Twitter.

According to the Sports Business Journal, Tuesday night’s triple-overtime game between the Pittsburgh Penguins and New York Rangers on ESPN topped that with 1.04 million viewers. For comparison, the Washington Capitals-Florida Panthers game on ESPN had 348,000.
