NHL off-ice official injured by pane of glass during Hurricanes-Bruins Game 3 in Boston
An off-ice official working in the penalty boxes at TD Garden was injured Friday night during the Hurricanes-Bruins Game 3 of the Stanley Cup playoffs when a pane of glass was jarred loose by fans banging on it in celebration after Boston scored a goal in the second period.
David Pastrnak scored on the power play to give Boston a 3-1 lead, and as fans reveled in the two-goal lead, the pane of glass in question toppled onto the of-ice official — the TV timeout coordinator — who was later identified as Joe Foley.
Trainers from both teams rushed from their respective benches to tend to him. Foley was wheeled off the ice on a stretcher, his eyes open as he exited the rink.
According to reports, Foley was taken to an area hospital as a precaution, but appears to be doing OK.
Both teams tapped their sticks in support of Foley as medical staff wheeled him off the ice. According to the Associated Press, a police officer remained at the spot where the glass had fallen to form a barrier when play resumed.
Foley was the second official impacted by outside forces Friday. During a TV timeout in the first period, linesman Jonny Murray was struck by a bucket being wheeled across the ice by one of the people clearing the playing surface during a commercial break. Murray was initially shaken up, but remained in the game.
