The Carolina Hurricanes added a veteran forward one month before the start of preseason training camp.

The Canes announced Tuesday that Paul Stastny had been signed to a one-year, $1.5 million contract. Stastny, 36, had 21 goals and 45 points with the Winnipeg Jets in the 2021-22 season and could help make up for the loss of forward Max Pacioretty (Achilles injury), and with forwards Vincent Trocheck and Nino Niederreiter leaving in free agency.

“Paul is an extremely reliable veteran who has been effective at both ends of the ice for his entire career,” Canes president and general manager Don Waddell said in a statement. “He adds even more experience and leadership to our forward group.”

Stastny has played 1,072 career regular-season games with Colorado, St. Louis, Vegas and Winnipeg, and served as an alternate captain for the Avalanche and Blues. He has 800 points in his career with 284 goals and 516 assists.

Stastny finished second on the Jets with a plus-14 plus/minus ranking and had a 14.9% shooting figure for the season. He also won 55.6% of his draws.

Pacioretty, who recently suffered a torn Achilles tendon, could be out as long as six months. The Canes acquired him in a trade with Vegas in July.

Pacioretty and Stastny were teammates with Vegas in 2018-19 and 2019-20. The Golden Knights traded Pacioretty to the Canes last month, but he recently suffered a torn Achilles in off-ice training.

Born in Quebec City, Quebec, Stastny has competed for Team USA internationally and was a member of the 2010 U.S. Olympic team — along with Canes assistant coach Tim Gleason — that won a silver medal.

Canes hire Sheahan to coach Wolves

In another personnel move Tuesday, the Canes have hired Brock Sheahan to be the new head coach of the Chicago Wolves, their AHL affiliate and the 2022 Calder Cup winner.

Sheahan, 38, led the Chicago Steel to the USHL’s 2021 Clark Cup as league champions and twice won the Anderson Cup as regular-season champs. His overall record as head coach was 100-27-12-3.

Sheahan replaces Ryan Warsofsky, who left the Wolves after last season to be an assistant coach with the San Jose Sharks.

“He brings that championship pedigree to our organization,” Waddell said in a statement.
