The Carolina Hurricanes will be down at least one more forward for the rest of their first-round Stanley Cup Playoff series against the New York Islanders, coach Rod Brind’Amour revealed in his news conference after Game 2 on Wednesday.

Teuvo Teravainen left the game late in the third period after getting slashed on the left hand by New York Islanders forward Jean-Gabriel Pageau. Brind’Amour said after the game the forward will have surgery Thursday morning and is out for the series.

“He’s out,” Brind’Amour said. “Slashed, 4:25 marker, broke his hand. With the puck, takes a shot, the guy absolutely tomahawks him. Absolutely. I know we had all the power plays, so you’re not going to make it a five-on-three, but take a look at the video. And he’s out for the series. So. There you go. They’re going to complain about all the power plays, but it’s a tomahawk chop. We just watched it. He has to have surgery tomorrow. There you go. So I’m a little pissed, to be honest with you.”

“The guy” was the Isles’ Pageau, who on the video appears to take a two-handed swing that connects on the thumb area of Teravainen’s left hand as Teravainen followed through on a shot attempt. Teravainen finished the shift, but went to the dressing room afterward and did not return.

He was one of several Hurricanes players who left the bench for repairs, including Brett Pesce, who needed stitches after being high-sticked under the left eye; Jordan Staal, who was plowed into from behind by the Islanders’ Matt Martin at the end of the first period; Jack Drury, who was hit by a puck on the bench; and Martin Necas, who left the game briefly after trying to jump out of a Hudson Fasching check on the end boards and taking the brunt of the impact on his left knee. Sebastian Aho was also high-sticked on the lip but was treated on the bench.

The Hurricanes had six power plays in Wednesday’s 4-3 overtime win; the Islanders had none, and coach Lane Lambert complained afterward that the officials missed a high-stick by Carolina’s Jordan Martinook on Islanders defenseman Scott Mayfield shortly before Jesper Fast’s game-winner, although replays appeared to indicate Mayfield lifted Martinook’s stick into his own face.

The Canes are already thin up front, beginning the series with out Max Pacioretty (torn Achilles) and Andrei Svechnikov (torn ACL), two forwards the Canes were hoping to count on for playoff scoring this season.

Game 3 is set for Friday in New York. Trade-deadline acquisition Jesse Puljujarvi, a healthy scratch for the first two games of the postseason, will likely draw into the lineup for Teravainen.
