Hurricanes’ Andersen back, still not happy Devils’ Timo Meier wasn’t penalized

Back at practice with his Carolina Hurricanes teammates on Friday and appearing unscathed from the collision that knocked him out of Game 4 against the New Jersey Devils last Sunday, Frederik Andersen said he was still curious why Timo Meier wasn’t penalized for running into him.

Andersen left the game and did not return, and officials initially called nothing, apparently arguing Andrei Svechnikov pushed Meier into the goalie. After a discussion among all four officials, they called a five-minute major penalty, but rescinded it on review.

“He’s obviously driving the net, put himself in the path, pretty much driving right through the crease,” Andersen said. “I don’t think Svech really did much to alter that path. Obviously he’s supposed to go to the net but he put himself through the crease and I was quite surprised to see that didn’t result in anything.”

Pyotr Kochetkov finished out the win in that game before the Hurricanes closed out the Devils with a double-overtime win in Game 5 on Tuesday, giving up three early goals before the Hurricanes rallied for a 5-4 win on Sebastian Aho’s winner.

“You never want to leave a game in the middle of a playoff series, and obviously we were able to close out the win there,” Andersen said. “Happy about that. But it sucks not being able to be out there.”

After skating with a small group at Invisalign on Thursday and the full group — minus Sebastian Aho (personal day) and a banged-up Eric Robinson — Andersen looks ready to go for the second-round series against the Washington Capitals, whenever it may start.

“He practiced yesterday, today he felt good,” Hurricanes coach Rod Brind’Amour said. “Same today. That’s a real positive.”

The Hurricanes were hoping to get a schedule for that series at the conclusion of Friday night’s game between the Winnipeg Jets and St. Louis Blues, and with Lenovo Center unavailable next Friday, Sunday and Tuesday, games 3 and 4 are likely to fall on some combination of Thursday, Saturday, Monday and Wednesday.

Either way, Andersen still has a few more days of practice with the Hurricanes to get back into the groove.

“Felt good,” Andersen said. “Nice to be be back out there with the guys and get back at it. Obviously a huge win for us to close out the series and happy that we’re moving on.”
