What has been a slow build-out of the Lenovo Center renovations will soon speed up considerably and will include several new features to the arena that opened in 1999.
The Centennial Authority, the arena landlord, in conjunction with the Carolina Hurricanes and N.C. State are considering major enhancements in its “Lenovo Center 2.0” plan that include:
- A “refresh” of the arena exterior, with an expanded lobby area and new entrances on the east and west sides of the arena.
- A beer hall on the south side of the arena on the plaza facing Carter-Finley Stadium that will be 6,000 square feet and will have a 1,400-square-foot South Terrace overlooking it.
- A new team store that will be roughly three times the size of “The Eye” now at the arena and will sell Hurricanes and N.C. State merchandise.
- Added seating capacity to the lower bowl with the reduction of aisles, and all new seating.
- A new Arena Club that will combine the space of the Ledge Lounge now on the PNC Club Level.
The enhancements, presented at the authority’s monthly board meeting, also include added concession areas, renovated bathrooms and added escalators on the main concourse and updated and modernized suites on the PNC Club Level.
The arena is undergoing $300 million in renovations, with a lot of work due to start after the Hurricanes’ hockey season, shutting down the building for two months.
“This is really exciting and has come after innumerable meetings and discussions,” authority chairman Philip Isley said Thursday after the Gensler presentation. “We’ll continue to look at the plans as they’re drawn up, and then we’ll start looking at the financial component to this. We’re hopeful the bond market will treat us well and we may have extra money over and above the 300 (million). I’m still bullish on that.
“Our intent is for all of this to be done. We have to go through the process, but we’re trying as hard as we can to build everything we possibly can. But we have to have a little luck with the financial markets.”
Entertainment district planned
Already opened is the View Bar on the third level, the private “bunker” suites, a multi-purpose meeting room and added storage areas. Other work will begin soon after the Hurricanes conclude the 2025-26 season.
Also planned in an entertainment district on 80 acres that surround the arena that will have housing, hotels, restaurants and shops and an outdoor concert venue.
“When this project is complete, Lenovo Center is going to look and feel like an entirely different building, inside and out,” Brian Fork, CEO of Hurricanes Holdings, said in a statement. “Every person who comes to this building is going to have a first-class experience to match the top venues in the NHL.”
Justin Gainey, who has been named NCSU’s new men’s basketball coach, was the Pack’s senior point guard when the arena — then named the Entertainment and Sports Arena — opened in 1999. Although subtle changes have been made to the arena through the years, the Wolfpack basketball program should benefit from the significant enhancements.
“The experience of attending an NC State basketball game or any event in the Lenovo Center is going to be even better following these updates,” NCSU athletic director Boo Corrigan said in a statement. “From improved operations to enhancements for our general fans and premium spaces, every aspect of the building has been thoughtfully designed to elevate the experience for Wolfpack fans.”
