Nash out 10-14 days with shoulder injury
Carolina Hurricanes forward Riley Nash will be sidelined 10-14 days with a shoulder injury, Canes coach Bill Peters said Monday.
Nash was injured Saturday in the first period of the Canes’ 4-3 loss to the Detroit Red Wings and did not return to the game.
The Canes lost defenseman James Wiesniewski — likely for the season — to a knee injury in the season opener Thursday against the Nashville Predators. Wisniewski, who had played 47 seconds, suffered a torn ACL and will have surgery Thursday in Raleigh.
Nash centered a line with Jeff Skinner and Chris Terry in the Red Wings game. His injury resulted in some shuffling of the lines Monday in practice as Elias Lindholm was moved from wing to center Skinner and Terry. Kris Vertsteeg replaced Lindholm on Victor Rask’s line opposite Eric Staal, and Joakim Nordstrom moved to the wing on Jordan Staal’s line opposite Nathan Gerbe.
The fourth line Monday had Jay McClement centering Brad Malone and Andrej Nestrasil. Malone has been a healthy extra in the first two games.
Rask left Saturday’s game in the final minute with an apparent arm injury but was at practice Monday. The Canes were off Sunday.
“It didn’t look good when he left the ice so we caught a little bit of a break there,” Peters said.
The Canes (0-2) host the Florida Panthers on Tuesday before leaving for seven consecutive road games. Peters said goalie Eddie Lack, obtained in an offseason trade with Vancouver, would get his first start after Cam Ward was in net the first two games.
The defensive pairs Monday were Justin Faulk-Ron Hainsey, John-Michael Liles-Michal Jordan, Noah Hanifin-Ryan Murphy.
The Canes played well the final two periods against Nashville in a 2-1 loss, then the first two periods against the Wings.
“We want to play well (and) we want to play for 60 minutes,” Peters said.
