Murphy assigned to Checkers

The Carolina Hurricanes on Thursday assigned defenseman Ryan Murphy to the Charlotte Checkers of the American Hockey League.

Murphy, 22, is expected to return to game action in Charlotte’s game on Saturday against Iowa. It will be his first game since suffering a concussion Nov. 14 in Carolina’s game against Philadelphia.

Murphy, who was at Canes practice Thursday at PNC Arena, has four assists in 17 games played with Carolina this season.
