This infographic charts every ‘Game of Thrones’ betrayal. Ever.
Need to brush up on the epic web of backstabbing and double-dealing on HBO’s “Game of Thrones” before Sunday’s season premiere?
Venngage.com has come up with an infographic charting every betrayal and broken alliance over the past six seasons. As fans of the series might imagine, it’s a BIG chart (and chock-full of spoilers, of course).
“Game of Thrones,” based on the best-selling books by George R.R. Martin, premiered on HBO in 2011. The sprawling fantasy series centers on several noble houses scheming and battling for the Iron Throne of the Seven Kingdoms on the fictional continent of Westeros. Blood and secrets are spilled aplenty along the way.
“We recorded 77 different acts of betrayal – every betrayal in the show, to our knowledge,” writes Sara McGuire in an accompanying blog post. The chart covers only the television show, not the books.
“We define betrayal as an act of going against one’s word, or an act of breaking the trust of a family member or ally,” McGuire writes.
The chart, created using Venngage infographic maker, shows most of the betrayals took place in the first season, McGuire notes.
“When you play the game of thrones, you win or you die,” says Cersei Lannister in the first season. McGuire says that certainly seems to be the case.
“What we found was that in the Game of Thrones, to deceive is, usually, to come out on top,” she writes. “The characters who by the end of the sixth season have the most power have also committed the most acts of betrayal. Most of their victims are dead and their houses decimated.”
More charts at the blog show how often frequent betrayers were themselves betrayed, and the relationships and motives of the double-dealers.
The seventh, and penultimate, season of “Game of Thrones” premieres Sunday night on HBO.
