Beloved '60s Rock Icons Are Releasing Their First-Ever Vocal Duet This Friday
Paul McCartney, 83, will release his first-ever vocal duet with fellow Beatles bandmate Ringo Starr, 85, this Friday. The track, "Home To Us," arrives ahead of McCartney's upcoming solo album The Boys of Dungeon Lane, out May 29.
McCartney unveiled the news Tuesday evening at an Abbey Road Studios playback event for 50 fans.
A Beatles First, More Than 60 Years Later
McCartney and Starr have played together since the early 1960s, when they joinedJohn Lennon and George Harrison in the band. Across six decades they have shared songwriting credits, drumming sessions, and stage time on each other's solo records. Until now, they had never recorded a vocal duet.
"So this song is done totally with Ringo in mind," McCartney said at the Abbey Road event. He told fans the track was built around the idea of returning to where they grew up.
Backing vocals on "Home To Us" come from Chrissie Hynde of The Pretenders and Sharleen Spiteri of Texas. Producer Andrew Watt, who has recently worked with the Rolling Stones and Elton John, helmed the album.
A Liverpool Origin Story
McCartney said the song reflects on where both men grew up. He came from Allerton; Starr was raised in the Dingle, a tougher working-class Liverpool neighborhood.
"In writing the song I'm talking about where we came from," McCartney said.
McCartney told fans he initially worried Starr did not care for the track because the drummer first sang only on the chorus. After a phone call, Starr returned to Watt's studio and added vocals across the full song.
"Home To Us" drops Friday, May 8. The Boys of Dungeon Lane follows on May 29.
