Katy Perry Reaches Career High Thanks To Viral TikTok Trend

The Katy Perry revival era is officially here!

The “California Gurls” singer reached over 80 million monthly listeners on Spotify on May 6, an all-time peak in her Spotify history. According to data shared with Newsweek by the streaming platform, Perry’s monthly listener numbers have risen exponentially, especially in the last 10 days, from 75 million on April 25 to 80 million on May 6.

This new career high is partly driven by the resurgence of Perry’s song “The One That Got Away,” one of the hit singles from her 2010 album “Teenage Dream.” The track was used as part of a TikTok trend where users reflected on their “top five horror movie moments” from their past. As of May 8, the song has been used in millions of TikTok videos, including the trend and users’ other nostalgic posts on the platform.

Spotify reported that “The One That Got Away” saw a 200% rise in global streams since March 23, and over 120% rise in the United States during that time.

In light of the song’s revival online, Perry also released a director’s cut of the “The One That Got Away” music video, which originally debuted in November 2011. The director’s cut included extended scenes from the original music video and featured new narration provided by Stevie Nicks.

As of May 8, the song also reached a new peak on the Billboard Hot 100 at 77, its highest position on the chart since its release over a decade ago.

Along with “The One That Got Away,” Perry’s song “Legendary Lovers” from her 2013 album “Prism” also saw a massive revival online. Spotify reported the song’s first spike on March 23, when streams jumped 70% in a single day. Since then, the track’s daily global streams have risen by over 11,000%, and by 13,200% in the United States alone.
