Three ultra-rare Marvel comics to fetch $34,000 at auction
Three ultra-rare Spider-Man and The Incredible Hulk comics are expected to fetch as much as $33,750 between them at auction.
A 1963 copy of Amazing Spider-Man No. 1 - touted as the Holy Grail of comic collecting - is estimated to fetch up to $18,750 alone.
Two Incredible Hulk comics, including the green superhero's first appearance in 1962, are expected to sell for as much as $10,000.
The comics, said to be some of the most 'important and enduring' in Marvel's history, will be sold later this month at Ewbank's Comics sale.
The Spider-Man comic, which features the first appearance of the superhero in comic form, was written by Stan Lee with Steve Ditko's cover and art.
"This Silver-Age masterpiece is an amazing rarity," Ewbank's head of comics and comic books, Tom Duma, said.
"As well as showing Spider-Man for the first time, it also includes the Chameleon, and the first Fantastic Four crossover with Spider-Man.
"This is widely regarded as one of the most important and enduring comics in Marvel history, with Spider-Man remaining a cornerstone of the Marvel Universe."
The comic carries a remarkable sale estimate of $18,750.
The Incredible Hulk No. 1, featuring the green giant's first appearance in 1962, with cover art by Jack Kirby, carries hopes of between $7,500 and $10,000.
Meanwhile, a November 1974 copy of Incredible Hulk No. 181, featuring the first appearance and cover of Wolverine, is another classic that is much sought after by fans.
The rare comic, from the collection of Stockholm-based Scandinavian store Comics Heaven, has a guide price of between $3,750 and $4,750.
Another highlight is a limited edition box set of 12 giclee prints of classic Marvel comic book covers signed by Stan Lee.
Released in 2018, the prints reproduce classic covers originally published between 1962 and 1990, and each is individually hand-signed by writer Stan Lee.
The set comprises three portfolios - Avengers, Hulk and Spider-Man - with each carrying its own certificate of authenticity.
The box set carries an upper estimate of $4,000.
"Ewbank's has quickly become one of the leading auction houses in the U.K. for comic books with a hammer total of nearly $562,500 for 2025," Duma added.
"A highlight was the Superman ‘This Island Bradman' Auction, where 47 lots took almost $62,500."
Ewbank's Comics and Comic Books auction takes place May 20.
