Odessa A'Zion Reveals Why She Left ‘Deep Cuts' After Casting Debate

Actors don’t shy away from celebrating major accomplishments like nabbing a dream role in a big-budget movie. Walking away from one is far less common. But that’s exactly what Odessa A’Zion chose to do after finding herself at the center of a casting debate surrounding A24’s upcoming adaptation of “Deep Cuts.” Now, almost six months after her exit, the actor has come forward to explain why she ultimately decided to walk away from the project.

Earlier this year, it was announced that the “Marty Supreme” star will be playing the role of Zoe Gutierrez, a character from Holly Brickley’s 2025 novel who is described as both Jewish and Mexican. The news spread like wildfire on social media, and fans of the book raised concerns that the role should be played by someone who shared the character’s Latina heritage. Odessa didn’t take much time to respond to the fans and announced on social media that she was officially exiting “Deep Cuts.”

Odessa A’Zion Says Authenticity Was Key to Her Deep Cuts Exit

In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the 25-year-old actor opened up about the casting controversy and didn’t shy away from admitting that she understood where many of the concerns were coming from. A’zion also shared that she initially auditioned for the movie’s lead part and was later offered another female role, not realizing an important aspect of the character at the time. She said, “I didn't think to read the book. I had read the script once. I went in for the female lead, and I didn't get it. Way later, they offered me the second female role. I didn't think to go back and read her name because that's the only time anything is mentioned in the script. Her last name was said once. I literally had no idea.”

However, when she got to know more about the character, she realized that the role was not the right one for her. Rather than viewing the criticism as a personal attack, Odessa saw it as part of a larger conversation about authenticity and representation in the entertainment industry.

Furthermore, the actor noted how frustrating the entire situation was because people had already formed opinions about her before understanding the entire scenario.

“Representation in Hollywood is so important, and there are so many other roles that I could play that aren't that. It's not a role for me. It was really frustrating, and that sucked, and people can think whatever they want, but I had no idea. I was happy when I learned about it because it popped up for me when I saw a tagged photo of myself and said, "Wait, hold on. What?" I literally called them right away and said, ‘I'm not doing this,'” the actor added.

For Odessa, the decision appears to have been less about avoiding controversy and more about making a choice she felt comfortable with. No one wants to walk away from a film, especially when you are receiving near-universal acclaim for your performances, but Odessa’s decision to step away from that particular project showcases the importance of the conversation surrounding authentic representation.
