AION 2 Brings Back NCSoft's MMO Universe With Massive Aerial Battles and a World 36 Times Larger

Nearly two decades after the original Aion became one of the most recognizable MMORPGs in the genre, NCSoft is preparing to launch AION 2, a new chapter that expands the series on a much larger scale. Scheduled for release in 2026, the game is being developed and published by NC and is set to arrive on Steam as a free to play MMORPG built with Unreal Engine 5.

AION 2 is centered around a concept that has always distinguished the franchise from many of its competitors: aerial combat. Rather than treating flight as a secondary traversal mechanic, NCSoft describes the sky as the foundation of the entire game world. Every region, battlefield, and conflict has been designed around vertical movement and combat in the air.

Players take on the role of a Daeva and choose between two rival factions. The Elyos believe they are the chosen people of Aion, while the Asmodians see themselves as survivors hardened by centuries of struggle. The conflict between these civilizations forms the backbone of the game's faction war system.

A New Story Set Two Hundred Years Later

AION 2 takes place 200 years after the events of the original game. The story unfolds in a world that has been divided following the collapse of the Tower of Aion, an event that continues to shape the fate of its inhabitants. Players will experience a conflict involving the Elyos, the Asmodians, and the Balaur as they explore the fractured world of Atreia.

Combat is built around timing, positioning, and skill combinations. Players can customize classes to fit their preferred playstyle, while aerial movement adds an additional layer of strategy to encounters. Rather than simply standing in place and trading attacks, battles are designed around movement through three dimensional space.

While many details about the global version are still being revealed, AION 2 already stands out through its focus on aerial combat, large scale faction warfare, and a world built around vertical exploration. For longtime fans of the original game, it represents the return of one of MMORPG gaming's most distinctive universes. For newcomers, it may be their first chance to experience a world where the sky is not simply part of the scenery, but the battlefield itself.
