Fall TV: Funny ‘American Housewife’ has sharp writing, likeable cast
New show: American Housewife
When and Where: 8:30 p.m. Tuesdays on ABC
Cast: Katy Mixon, Diedrich Bader, Ali Wong, Carly Hughes, Daniel DiMaggio, Meg Donnelly, Julia Butters
Premise: A middle class family rents a home in upscale Westport, Conn., to take advantage of the good public schools. But the stay-at-home mom, Katie, doesn’t want her three kids to be like the shallow, vain people in the town (it could be too late for a couple of them).
Verdict: Very funny. The pilot is mostly about how the mom doesn’t want her overweight neighbor to move because then she’ll be “the second fattest housewife in Westport,” aka “The Vice Fattest.” And there’s a great running gag about a woman in town dubbed “Two Fitbits” (because she always wears two Fitbits ... but why??). As for the kids, Katie’s teenage daughter has embraced the Westport lifestyle, her uber-capitalist tweenage son won’t participate in the school food drive because he doesn’t believe in handouts, and the smallest girl has crippling OCD (but she’s super cute and sweet). There’s some very sharp writing here and a very likeable cast. Duke fans will want to hang in until the very last scene.
