What Happened to Rudy Giuliani? Cause, Condition Explored

Rudy Giuliani's name was trending on the evening of May 3, but why? What happened to Rudy Giuliani?

The former New York mayor, who was widely praised for how he ran the city during the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks and who became a much more controversial figure in later years, has been hospitalized, although it's not clear why. However, it sounds serious. Giuliani is 81 years old. He was New York City's mayor from 1994 to 2001.

What Is Rudy Giuliani's Condition? The Cause Is Not Known

Ted Goodman, who started a livestream show with Giuliani, revealed the former mayor's condition in a post on X. "Mayor Rudy Giuliani is currently in the hospital, where he remains in critical but stable condition," he wrote.

"Mayor Giuliani is a fighter who has faced every challenge in his life with unwavering strength, and he's fighting with that same level of strength as we speak. We do ask that you join us in prayer for America's Mayor Rudy Giuliani," added Goodman.

The specific cause of Giuliani's health issue was not released.

"I wish him well. I enjoyed visiting the city during his term as mayor with my family," a person wrote on Goodman's thread, which filled with prayers for Giuliani, a former U.S. Attorney.

"Prayers up for America's Mayor!!!" another person wrote, using the nickname that Giuliani was widely given after September 11. "Wishing Rudy Giuliani all the best and speedy recovery," another person wrote on X.

According to CNN, Giuliani said on May 1 on his X show "America's Mayor Live" that his "voice is a little under the weather, so I won't be able to speak as loudly as I usually do." He's "seen coughing a few times on the streamed program," CNN reported.

Rudy Giuliani Was in a Car Accident Not That Long Ago

According to Fox News, Giuliani was injured in a car accident just eight months ago, but it's not clear whether that bears any connection to his hospitalization now.

In the car accident, Giuliani "was flagged down by a woman fleeing a domestic-violence incident. The former mayor helped the woman and called 911, remaining at the scene until police arrived," Fox News reported. "He later left the scene and was traveling on the highway when the vehicle he was riding in was struck from behind at a high speed."

Giuliani was badly injured in that incident. According to Fox, he suffered "a fractured thoracic vertebrae," along with"multiple lacerations and contusions and injuries to his left arm and lower leg."

Does Rudy Giuliani Have a Wife & Kids?

Giuliani, who has three divorces under his belt, is not currently married. In 2024, he was dating a woman named Maria Ryan, but they were not married, The New York Post reported.According to People, Giuliani has two kids, Andrew and Caroline. They are his kids with his ex-wife, Donna Hanover, a former television journalist he met on a blind date, People reported.

"It was a whirlwind," Hanover told New York Magazine about dating and marrying Giuliani. "He was smart and interesting. And I wanted children. I was 32 at the time." Their 2000 split was contentious and high-profile, however.
