'Die Hard' Ranked Among 'Best Action Movies of All Time'
The 1980s was a very formative time for action movies, with the genre leaning heavily into the bold, stylish, often cheesy reputation that films like Top Gun, Lethal Weapon, and the James Bond franchise were perpetuating.
Die Hard fits neatly into this category. Directed by John McTiernan and starring Bruce Willis in perhaps his most iconic lead role, the story follows a detective who arrives in Los Angeles to spend Christmas with his wife, but is forced to infiltrate a skyscraper and rescue her when the building is taken over by terorrists.
Oozing with classic '80s style, Die Hard has become an undeniable classic over the years thanks to its simplistic storytelling, fun performances, and non-stop momentum. The film gives viewers a perfect opportunity to sit back and get lost in a high-stakes story that keeps them on the edge of their seat from start to finish.
In 2021, Die Hard was voted No. 2 on Rolling Stone's list of the 50 Best Action Movies of All Time, narrowly beating modern classics like John Wick and The Raid: Redemption.
Even today, almost 40 years after it was originally released, Die Hard remains one of the most popular and influential action movies ever released. It's always been a massive hit with both general audiences and professional critics alike, as displayed by its Rotten Tomatoes score of 94%.
Die Hard was also a big commercial hit, bringing in an impressive $143 million worldwide against a reported budget of $25 million (via Box Office Mojo). It proved that even towards the end of the decade, when it seemed like action movies had aleady peaked in popularity, audiences still wanted more.
Unfortunately, much of Die Hard's legacy has been tainted in recent years by the film's many underwhelming sequels-none of which capture the same kinetic energy as the original.
Die Hard 2 was a minor disappointment that still has plenty of merits, but once the franchise reached low points such as A Good Day to Die Hard, it was clear this series was never coming back to its peak.
Thankfully, the original movie is available on streaming for audiences to watch at home whenever they like. In the United States, Die Hard can currently be streamed on Amazon Prime Video or AMC+ with a relevant subscription-though it will be leaving the latter in June 2026.
Alternatively, fans can purchase or rent the film on any major VOD service, such as Amazon Prime or Apple TV/
