Viral Video of Injured Seal Waiting for Help Sparks Renewed Debate Over SeaWorld
A video of an injured seal isolated on the rocks staring at their mangled tail has racked up more than 27 million views on TikTok this week.
The viral video is sparking heated debate online over the decision of the video's poster to contact SeaWorld Rescue to aid the injured seal.
While that marine life theme park's reputation is still much-maligned after the scathing documentary Blackfish exposed SeaWorld's unethical animal treatment, viewers argue that SeaWorld Rescue doesn't engage in those harmful practices and is a top-notch rescue organization.
But not everyone is convinced that this is the case.

This injured seal repeatedly stares at their mangled tail without anywhere to go.
Trapped on the rocks by the shore, with the sound of the waves crashing in, the situation appears increasingly perilous for the injured creature.
The man filming this video repeatedly calls out to the injured seal. In a soothing voice, he tells the wounded creature that he's calling for help.
However, this video's caption notes that SeaWorld Rescue is the organization this man contacted to help this injured seal, which not everyone was happy about.
As the Seal Waits for Rescue, Online Reactions Quickly Turn Into a Bigger Conversation
Some viewers took issue with the fact that SeaWorld was attempting to rescue this injured seal: "Can't believe you called SeaWorld; there are many other organizations that are so much better than SeaWorld."
Other viewers defended SeaWorld's animal rescue program as being top-notch: "SeaWorld has probably the best animal rescue program in the world. They are AZA accredited and accredited by the Humane Society."
Viewers also pointed out that SeaWorld's rescue organization is different from the controversial theme park: "SeaWorld Rescue is such an amazing team. I'm sorry to the people stuck in the past, their rescue unit is not the same as their parks. Also, their parks have made massive changes for the animals."
As recently as last year, the World Animal Protection organization wrote an open letter condemning SeaWorld for abusing the animals in their charge for public entertainment.

Their accusations included that the trainers at different SeaWorld facilities were not properly qualified to train or care for the animals, and that they housed these marine animals in cramped facilities, creating a "heartbreaking spectacle of misery dressed up as family entertainment."
They also wrote of scenarios where beluga whales were forced into beaching themselves so that children could sit on them, while orcas and dolphins were coerced into performing unnatural routines for theme park entertainment.
Although some SeaWorld parks have received American Humane animal welfare certifications, organizations such as PETA still deride SeaWorld as a "prison" for marine animals.
However, some visitors to their facilities have noted that SeaWorld has greatly improved the way they treat animals in the wake of the Blackfish documentary that detailed their malpractices.
They also note that rescue efforts, such as the one that was about to be underway in the above TikTok video, are essential for helping injured marine animals.
The best thing people can do is carefully research what happens at these facilities and theme parks and pressure these organizations to prioritize animal well-being over theme park profits.
