The sight of a shut-down shelter cat is enough to make any pet parent reach for the tissues, but one senior rescue cat is both breaking and stealing hearts with her sad vibes. She's a special female orange cat, but she was struggling to survive in a hoarding situation before she found herself in an unfamiliar, overwhelming shelter.

Fortunately, Utah pet foster mom Kayla, who's known for her social media accounts @rosieandtheshelterpups, is ready to help the 'most shut-down cat in the shelter' feel like herself again. Kayla brought her home to foster on Tuesday, May 26! This senior cat's foster transformation has already begun, and day one is already looking promising.

still can't believe our sweet senior girl came from a hoarder house… but I'm so glad she is going to have a clean & quiet environment to open up in while we find her a forever home #seniorcat#orangecat#sheltercat#fostercat

This poor kitty is so scared, confused, and sad, but there's so much love and comfort coming her way. It's only a matter of time until she realizes she's safe. It might take her days or even weeks to truly open up to her new space, but once she does, nothing will ever be the same.

"Oh, she is going to be the biggest love bug once she comes out of her shell," @b_randtandember commented. She already gave Kayla a peek of her sweet personality when she leaned into the petting, which is already a wonderful sign. A month from now, this shy kitty will be even more comfortable with giving and receiving love!

A senior cat's foster transformation is one of the most beautiful metamorphoses a person can witness, especially when a cat has been through as much as this old lady has. When she's ready to open up, she'll be so grateful for the rescue! For now, though, she just needs a quiet environment to decompress in.

Once Kayla learns more about this rescue cat and her personality, she can start matching her with an ideal forever home. Fortunately, there's no rush, because she has the perfect foster home until her forever family finds her.

Why Female Orange Cats Are Special

As several commenters pointed out, this sweet senior girl is special for many reasons, including that she's a female orange cat! The majority of orange cats are male, but every now and then, a female cat develops the same mutation that gives males their orange color.

This occurs because the mutation that's responsible for the orange coat color occurs on the X chromosome. Females have XX chromosomes in their DNA, while males have XY, which means males only have to inherit one copy of this mutation for the orange color to show. Females must inherit it from both parents to be orange themselves! If a female cat inherits one copy of the mutation, it tends to show as a calico or tortoiseshell cat coat.

This is just another reason to appreciate this resilient rescue kitty, who's finally turning over a new leaf thanks to Kayla's selflessness. We can't wait to see what's in store for this sweet girl!
