Darude's "Sandstorm" Has Been Named Most Iconic Dance Song of All Time by a Reddit Fan Vote

There have been disco greats, dubstep superstars, club music icons, and house legends who created many dance music tracks that are considered masterpieces. Even when compared to decades of beloved tracks from the energetic genre, Darude's "Sandstorm" was recently named the most iconic dance song of all time.

Darude's 'Sandstorm' Voted 'Most Iconic Dance Track of All Time' by Music Fans

In February 2026, a fan on the r/EDM subreddit made a post asking other fans of the genre to name what the "most iconic dance track of all time" is. The post received many responses, and upvotes were given to many tracks that have stood the test of time. Still, the most popular response named Darude's "Sandstorm," with it getting more than double the upvotes of the second-most upvoted comment. On top of that, one user responded to the post to say that the argument that "Sandstorm" is the most iconic dance song ever was "straight facts."

Originally released in October 1999, "Sandstorm" became a rare example of a purely instrumental song that became a hit. The track has reached No. 3 on the U.K. charts and No. 25 on Billboard's Dance Streaming Songs chart. In the latter case, it enjoyed so much longevity that it hit that chart peak in 2015, more than 15 years after it was released. Exclaim! also noted that it became the world's best-selling 12-inch single in the year 2000. The song currently has more than 318 million views on YouTube, and it has been streamed more than 614 million times on Spotify, which proves people continue to enjoy it.

There are several reasons why "Sandstorm" has enjoyed so much success and been voted an iconic track. Some obvious examples of that include that it transcended the genre to become mainstream, and it arguably perfected the beloved build and drop formula. The central melody has also become instantly recognizable for generations of listeners, which is why it has been a staple of TV, movies, and even commercials. Perhaps the biggest reason why "Sandstorm" is iconic is that it represents a peak in dance music popularity during the late '90s and early 2000s, when rave culture briefly took over.

Several other songs were brought up in the comment section of the subreddit post and received upvotes. Here are some of the other most popular song choices from the responses:

  • Daft Punk - "One More Time"
  • Donna Summer - "I Feel Love"
  • Avicii - "Levels"
  • Swedish House Mafia - "Don't You Worry Child"
  • Underworld - "Born Slippy"
  • Prodigy - "Firestarter"
  • Eric Prydz - "Call on Me!"
