Mom Wonders What She'll Look Like 10 Months Postpartum, Reality Shocks Her
A California mom imagined her life after giving birth, but the reality turned out very different from what she pictured.
Lindsey Campbell, 30, wondered what she would look like 10 months postpartum. The last thing she expected was giving birth to twins.
Campbell and her husband Jake, 34, are parents to four children: Hayden, now 5, Jack, now 2, and twins Luke and Tommy, now 1.
Lindsey told Newsweek this has been the most challenging year of her life.
"It is easy to be hard on yourself while navigating twins for the first time alongside two older children," she said. "A lot of it was survival and dealing with mom guilt."
While she credited Jake as a supportive partner, his job as a firefighter requires him to work 72-hour shifts, leaving Lindsey to solo parent long stretches.
Experts said Lindsey's experience is far from unusual.
Research suggested that having children close in age can significantly increase parenting demands, particularly when support is limited.
One explanation-known as an "evolutionary mismatch"-pointed out that, historically, children were typically spaced further apart, allowing mothers more time to recover and focus on one child at a time.
Today, shorter gaps between births are more common, but that doesn't necessarily make them easier.
Raising multiple very young children simultaneously can place heavier emotional and physical strain on parents, with experts noting that caring for closely spaced children "can be exhausting"-especially without strong support networks.
For Lindsey, the biggest surprise was just how much life would change.
"I didn't know what I didn't know," she said. "Having twins is so challenging-the lack of sleep with two babies while still being present for the big kids’ lessons and school drop-offs was a lot. I definitely didn’t realize what I was about to get into; it was a year of many firsts."
Lindsey shared her journey of having four children under the age of 5 in a reel on Instagram (@llindseyycampbell).
The clip opens in a hospital room shortly after she has given birth. Cradling her newborn, Lindsey adds a text overlay: "I wonder what I'll look like 10 months postpartum."
Moments later, the video cuts sharply forward in time. Instead of holding one baby, Lindsey appears on screen with two-her twins-alongside the caption: "Me 10 months later…"
"I was following a TikTok trend that was going around and made the video for fun, not thinking much of it," Lindsey said. "I made it because I knew there were people going through similar situations, and I thought they could resonate with it."
Nearly a year on, Lindsey said life is still intense-but also joyful.
"Life now is crazy-crazy hard but crazy fun," she said. "The kids love each other so much, and I know it’s meant to be."
