Orphan Barrel's New Rare 25-Year-Old Whisky Will Change Your Mind About Canadian Whiskies

Originally launched in 2013, the Orphan Barrel Collection is one of the longest continually running series of limited release whiskies in the entire Diageo portfolio.

Today marks a new dawn for that anthology-or a new night, anyway. The latest edition to the Orphan Barrel program is Night Sage, which is a 25-year-old blend of ultra-rare Canadian whisky. It is available now at select stores and has a suggested retail price of $225.

I scored an exclusive first sip of the 90-proof whisky and have some detailed thoughts to share below. But first we need to talk a little bit more about what exactly makes a barrel an Orphan Barrel.

The History of the Orphan Barrel Collection

Originally, the Orphan Barrel Collection was conceived as the Orphan Barrel Whiskey Company by its parent company spirits conglomerate Diageo. Across its different brands Diageo had built up vast stocks of ultra-aged American whiskey. Many of these barrels were stored at its historic Stitzel-Weller warehouses in Louisville, Kentucky. Included in this hoard were a number of casks that had been produced as standalone experiments. There were also small caches of whiskey that just wouldn't make sense logistically to blend off into larger pre-existing brands.

So an executive decision was made to silo off these special spirits into a separate brand altogether. Think of it like when some of your favorite musicians from various bands splinter off to form a supergroup. The Traveling Wilburys, if you like. This spirited side project was at first wholly devoted to super-old American whiskeys, complete with its own dedicated bottling line located inside of the Diageo-owned Dickel Distillery in Tullahoma, Tennessee. The first release was the so-called Barterhouse, which was a 20-year-old high-corn bourbon that was reportedly distilled at the Bernheim Distillery.

Tasting Night Sage Canadian Whisky

That brings us to the latest release in the series, Night Sage. In addition to being a 25-year-old blend, it also happens to be the 25th release overall in the Orphan Barrel series (and just the second Canadian blend). This one contains whisky that was distilled in both Ontario and Manitoba provinces. (Diageo won't disclose the specific distilleries where the liquor was made.)

The distillate was matured in a combination of first-fill, second-fill, and multi-use barrels prior to being combined together. This maturation process allowed for a slow and steady aging, never overwhelming its contents with too much oak influence. What also helped ensure that it didn't get too woody was Canada's long cold winters, which slows down the extraction of flavor compounds from the barrel.

"While the majority of our portfolio has comprised of American and Scotch whiskies, this Canadian release explores further corners of Diageo whisky archives, with the intention of bottling a diverse collection of spirits at their peak," said Mark Balkenende, Master Blender Canada at Diageo. "This particular whisky distinguishes itself through its unique blending approach, with Night Sage combining two different distillate whiskeys, with varying cask past lives, to create a distinct profile that sets it apart from what could be considered a typical Orphan Barrel offering."

What emerged after a quarter of a century is a butterscotch bomb. The straw-toned tipple pours into a snifter with aromas of toasted waffle and maple syrup. Very on-brand, Canada. The first sip reveals a roasted chestnut-like texture and a fig-forward palate. It's in the finish that you fully embrace the aforementioned confection.

Beyond the whisky itself, I appreciate that Night Sage shows imbibers and collectors the full flavor spectrum of Canadian whisky and the potential for innovation in the category.
