Aldi grocery store planned for Conover, to be located across from Walmart

Aldi, a grocery store chain known for discounted prices, plans to open a new store in Conover.

Monday night, the Conover City Council unanimously approved the annexation of land that will be the site of the proposed Aldi. The city council previously approved the rezoning of the land to clear the way for the grocery store.

Aldi will be located on 11.38 acres on the opposite side of N.C. Business Highway 16 from the Conover Walmart.

After annexing the property, Conover will receive an increase in property taxes once the store is constructed. In 2025, Hickory received about $13,500 in real and personal property taxes from the company. Aldi has a store located at 1545 8th St. Drive SE in Hickory.

As of June 2, Aldi has 95 stores in North Carolina, according to the company's website. The company has not announced a date for the opening of the Conover store.
