Why dogs love their stuffies so much

It's not unusual for dogs of all kinds to grow an affectionate attachment to their stuffed toys. In fact, it's just instinct.

According to PetMate, a dog's obsession with a stuffed toy can be attributed to several factors, including "instinctual behavior, mental stimulation, comfort and security," among other reasons.

"Plush toys can serve as play tools, helping keep a dog's mind active and engaged," they explain. "Chewing, tossing, and playing with these toys can be a fun and rewarding activity." Additionally, the soft plushies can mimic prey for a dog, which can also trigger "a dog's natural hunting instincts."

Additionally, they can provide comfort for your dog, especially for those pups who suffer from separation anxiety when their parents are out of the house. They even help pups bond more closely with their parents and caretakers during playtime.

When picking out the right toy for your pup, there are several factors to consider, like their age, breed, chewing habits, and more. Their personalities and play habits can determine which toy you should buy and which to avoid.

When you decide to purchase a new toy, make sure the material is durable and that there are no small parts that could pose a choking hazard.

Safety is of the utmost importance when it comes to the toys your pet plays with, so it's also essential that playtime is supervised, especially with a brand-new toy. Also make sure to check toys for any damage that could be harmful for your dog after every play session.
