Walkertown bookstore aims to build community one page at a time

Jordan Philemon and Brittany King, the co-owners of Crossroads Bookshop, have transformed a storefront in Walkertown into a cozy spot where people can read, relax, and make new friends outside of their homes and workplaces.

Philemon and King opened Crossroads Bookshop's brick-and-mortar store in mid-May at 5190 Reidsville Road in Walkertown.

Prior to opening the store, Philemon and King have been doing pop-ups at events throughout the Triad since last September.

The bookstore offers a variety of genres, including fantasy, romance, mystery, thrillers, Young Adult fiction, and children's books. The bookstore also serves coffee, hot chocolate, apple cider, and iced refreshers.

Dark bookshelves flank each side of the room, and two plush couches are set close to a sleek coffee counter.

King said she wanted introverts like her to have a third place, not home or work, with a welcoming social environment.

"I think people need a third place, especially with how the world is right now, to give you somewhere to build community with people that think like you or think differently than you and still be able to find some common ground," King said.

Philemon said she wants the bookstore to live up to its name and act as a crossroads to introduce people to new books and new experiences.

"It's close to my heart when I meet other people who just moved to the area. It's fun to be able to plug them into other places and other connections and welcome them to the area," Philemon said.

The bookstore also plans to host book clubs, craft nights, movie nights, and an audiobook club, where participants listen to audiobooks while walking at various parks in the Triad.
