Lidl sets opening date for its first Raleigh store. Here’s what it’s giving away.

The first Lidl grocery store in Raleigh will open the morning of Nov. 16 with treats for early arrivals.

The northeast Raleigh store at 4308 Wake Forest Road will greet its first 100 customers with a chance to win up to $100 in Lidl gift cards. Shoppers will also find food samples throughout the store and will be given reusable bags while supplies last.

Games and other activities will continue through the weekend.

Doors open at 8 a.m., following a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Lidl is part of a new wave of grocery store brands that have been moving into the Triangle and elsewhere in North Carolina. Since the company opened its first store in the state in June, Lidl says it has driven down prices in some markets by as much as 30 percent.

“This ‘Lidl’ effect is great news, not just for Lidl customers but for everyone who shops in the areas surrounding our stores,” said Will Harwood, the U.S. spokesman for the Germany-based Lidl.

The company will have 16 stores in North Carolina with the opening of the Raleigh store and another in Winston-Salem the same day.

The Triangle has seen heightened interest from grocery chains since Florida-based Publix first entered the market about three years ago. It has since opened two more in the Triangle and two more are on the way. Since then, Arizona-based Sprouts has opened a store in Raleigh; Aldi, another German discounter, is remodeling its area stores; and Wegmans has announced multiple stores for Cary, Raleigh and Chapel Hill.

Lidl says it will celebrate its first holiday season in the United Staes by stocking its stores with more than 500 seasonal products.

Lidl has more than 10,000 stores in 28 countries. It established a U.S. headquarters in Virginia in 2015 and spread regional offices and distribution centers in Alamance County and in Virginia, Maryland and Georgia.
