Woman questioned about baby remains found beneath Smithfield home
Police on Thursday located and spoke with a woman they have called a person of interest in their investigation of why the remains of two infants were found in trash bags under a house last weekend, they said in a statement.
They disclosed nothing about what they learned from Bridgette Morgan Smith, 40, whom they had said Wednesday they wanted to interview about the remains found under a house at 102 Hartley Drive last weekend.
Capt. R.K. Powell had said detectives were looking for Smith so they could “speak with her and ask for her assistance by providing any information that might help in determining the identification of these two infants.”
The state medical examiner’s office told police Tuesday that the remains found under the house on April 16 were from human babies, Powell said.
A resident called police Saturday afternoon after finding the bags while doing repairs, Powell said.
When they said they wanted to find Smith, police called the case “very tragic” and said “the subsequent investigation will take time and cooperation to complete properly.”
