Carrboro house fire kills 1

One person was killed Friday night in a fire that destroyed a Carrboro home.

Carrboro Fire Chief Susanna Williams said she could not release the name of the person killed at this time.

The Carrboro Fire-Rescue Department was dispatched to 1144 Smith Level Road at 10:41 p.m. Friday to respond to a structure fire. When crews arrived, the home was fully engulfed with smoke and flames.

It took crews, including the Chapel Hill Fire Department, North Chatham Fire Department and White Cross Fire Department, about an hour and a half to get the fire under control, but the home was a total loss.

The Orange County Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating.

The home, valued at $105,657, did not have fire sprinklers.

Two firefighters suffered injuries that were not life-threatening.

“One sustained a burn and the other was just a dehydration heat injury,” Williams said.
