Firefighters find body after garage apartment fire in Wake

Firefighters who put out a garage fire at a home in northern Wake County early Friday morning discovered a body inside an apartment above the garage, according to the Wake County Sheriff’s Office.

Investigators were unable to identify the victim, whose remains were taken to the state medical examiner’s office for identification, said sheriff’s spokesman John Dee Jones.

Jones said the fire was in an apartment above a garage behind a home at 7724 Brookdale Drive off Forestville Road. When firefighters arrived they found “a fully engulfed fire,” Jones said.

Fire officials searching through the charred rubble and debris called sheriff’s deputies at 3 a.m. after finding the body.

Jones said the death and the cause of the fire are “still under investigation.”
