Man dies in predawn fire at home near Garner

A 72-year-old man died in a predawn fire Tuesday at his home at 4851 Auburn Church Road near Garner, officials said.

The body of James D. Jones was taken to the State Medical Examiner’s Office to determine the cause of his death, and authorities were working Tuesday to determine how the fire started.

The blaze in the one-story home was reported about 4 a.m., Garner Deputy Fire Chief Tim Herman said.

Wake County Sheriff Donnie Harrison said deputies, representatives from the Wake County Fire Marshal’s office, the Wake County Sheriff’s Office and the City-County Bureau of Investigation were at the fire scene. The cause was unknown, but authorities had no indication it was suspicious, Harrison said.

Apparatus from several departments was called to the scene, at the intersection of Strawberry Lane.
