Garner Fourth of July celebration sparks excitement

Thousands flocked to Lake Benson Park on Sunday night eager to ignite Fourth of July festivities.

With games, concessions and music performances from the Carolina Soul Band and the N.C. Symphony, there was something for everybody at Garner’s annual Independence Day celebration.

Several families arrived as doors opened at 5 p.m. so they could play games, hear music and visit arts and crafts tables.

Eva Cain, 9, traveled from Virginia Beach. She arrived early and won a stuffed animal at a hula hoop contest. Like most kids, though, the fireworks was the part she was most looking forward to.

“I like the fireworks because they’re so loud and beautiful,” Eva said.

Others at the festival were making a return trip because of the family-friendly atmosphere.

“It’s our second time out here,” said Jason Robertson, 37, from Clayton. “It’s a fun time for the kids and the fireworks.”

Garner Mayor Ronnie Williams said he is proud the admission-free event provides a platform for bringing community members together.

“I’m appreciative of the fact that people recognize Garner does it for the citizens,” Williams said.

“The symphony’s playing, there are games for the kids and there’s plenty of food to eat. It’s an opportunity where you can go and not have to spend any money or spend a little bit.”

While the event was designed for families to come together and celebrate the Fourth of July weekend, planners also encouraged people to take time to recognize the sacrifices made for the United States to become independent.

“This (Fourth of July celebration) just gives us an opportunity to allow people to rethink that time that is important in all of our lives,” said Sonya Shaw, Garner’s Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources director.
