State troopers have identified the driver killed in a crash Tuesday on Zebulon Road as Janelle Vick Brown, 64, of Zebulon.

Three other people involved in the accident, including two children ages 8 and 11, were transported to WakeMed with injuries. Their conditions were not made available.

The children have been confirmed to be students at East Wake Academy in Zebulon.

The accident took place about 8:30 a.m. at the intersection of Zebulon Road, which is N.C. 96, and Fowler Road north of Zebulon.

Witnesses reported Brown’s Chevrolet Equinox failed to stop at the stop sign on Fowler Road and pulled into the path of a westbound tractor-trailer truck driven by Norris Riggins, 50, of Wilson, Highway Patrol spokesman Lt. Jeff Gordon said.

The tractor-trailer struck the SUV at an angle causing it to travel off the right side of the road and spill its load of lumber in a field on the northeast corner of the intersection, where both the truck and the SUV came to rest.

The incident closed at least one lane of N.C. 96 for several hours while troopers from the patrol’s crash-reconstruction unit determined how the accident happened.
