George Brooks: Extremists, not Republicans
Eight letters to your April 26 Sunday Forum “Tax-cut trickery” all lamented our Republican legislature’s tax policies, which have adversely impacted our middle class and seniors.
It’s important to emphasize that many of our legislators and many in the U.S. Congress aren’t Republicans or conservatives – they are extremists who have hijacked a Republican Party that was once capable of reasonable policies and compromise.
Bankrolled by well-heeled individuals and special interests, these extremists have employed misinformation, deception, lies and voter disenfranchisement to gain power for the benefit of a small sector of America – big money.
Given untethered power, these extremists will to the detriment of future generations, gut education, Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid and safety nets for those struggling to survive, as well as curb environmental regulations and desensitize financial safeguards risking a “2008” repeat.
All eight letter-writers expressed the same sentiment – outrage. Why would anyone want to endorse an agenda that skewers so many Americans? By doing so, many have unknowingly been voting against their own interests. That doesn’t make sense.
Their tax bill was a wake-up call. Time to take a hard look at what’s happening.
