Sharon Norton: Focus on Alzheimer’s not AIDS

Regarding the May 11 news article “GSK, UNC partner to seek cure for AIDS”: I am all in favor of finding cures for devastating diseases, but my first concern is to find the treatment and cure for Alzheimer’s disease.

This is a problem that one does not develop from any lifestyle choices. My understanding is that AIDS is normally contracted by sexual activity and contaminated needle use. These are activities that one can choose not to participate in.

I am truly perplexed about the focus by GSK and UNC on AIDS and not the brain problems that innocent people develop every day through no fault of their own.
