Kathleen Drewno: Avoiding North Carolina

As a high school junior, my grandson is in the midst of searching for “the” college/university. After visiting Davidson College and many others within the past year, Davidson was his top choice.

A few days ago, I asked him if Davidson College was still at the top of his list of those colleges in which he is interested. His response made me so proud of him for the integrity that he demonstrated by it.

He said that not only was Davidson not his No. 1 choice now but, also, he had completely dropped it from the list of schools in which he was interested. Why? He said that he could not consider attending a school in North Carolina because of the recent passage of House Bill 2 by the state legislature and the signing of it into law by Gov. Pat McCrory.

So now my grandson continues to visit and explore other schools that might be interested in an applicant with a 35 ACT score, excellent GPA and a wide variety of extracurricular and philanthropic activities.

The world has enough smart people. What we need are smart people with immense integrity, the kind displayed by my grandson.

Kathleen Drewno
