Melissa Sharpley: Non-LGBT have rights also
Regarding the April 12 news article “McCrory order expands protections, disappoints critics”: What about my rights? I have rights that don’t seem to be considered in this fight.
I keep reading about Gov. Pat McCrory’s “hate” or “bigotry” toward LGBT people. Nothing could be further from the truth. Neither the governor nor I have any animosity toward LGBT people.
However, this new thing about having men in my bathroom is ridiculous. What about my rights? I think I have a right to go into the women’s bathroom where I have been going all my life without having a man come in there with me simply because he “feels” more like a woman. In my eyes, he’s still a man.
How am I to be able to tell if he’s a man who feels like a woman or a man who wants to abuse me in some way? Frankly, I think this entire topic is ridiculous and has the potential to be dangerous if LGBT bathrooms become the norm. There are always perverts out there who can abuse this and, believe me, they will.
How about we just let things be? That’s the safest thing to do. I’m glad my governor agrees.
