NBA Recognizes VJ Edgecombe's Historic Playoff Accomplishment

The No. 7 seed Philadelphia 76ers mounted an upset victory over the No. 2 seed Boston Celtics Tuesday night, taking down the home team with a 111-97 final score at the TD Garden.

The 76ers were led by a historic postseason performance from rookie guard VJ Edgecombe, who finished the game with 30 points and 10 rebounds - both playoff career highs. The No. 3 overall pick also set a new playoff career high for made three pointers, knocking down six of his 10 attempts from behind the 3-point arc.

The NBA took to social media to recognize Edgecombe’s historic playoff outing.

“VJ Edgecombe is the youngest player in NBA history to record 30+ points and 10+ rebounds in a playoff game. He is also just the second player to do so at age 20 or younger, joining Magic Johnson,” the league wrote on X. “The 76ers' guard is the first rookie to reach those marks in a playoff game since Tim Duncan in 1998.”

Edgecombe and Tyrese Maxey, who chipped in with 29 points of his own, took advantage of the Celtics’ drop coverage. The 76ers connected on 19 of their 39 shoots from beyond the 3-point arc.

“I’m going to be honest, I think we all knew where the shots were going to come from,” Edgecombe said after the game. “We knew where we were going to get the shots from, where the help was going to be at. So just credit my teammates for just, we kept trusting each other. Everyone can make a play on the court, so we kept trusting each other and I was in the spot and they wanted me to shoot the ball.

“It wouldn’t have been right if I didn’t shoot the ball, so I had to shoot the ball, hit wide-open shots and try to get my teammates assists.”

With the series now tied at 1-1, the Celtics and 76ers will travel to Philadelphia for a Game 3 matchup on Friday night.
