Old Will Hammond Comments Resurface Amid Brendan Sorsby NCAA Controversy
Multiple reports this week confirmed that Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby is at the center of a wide-ranging NCAA investigation tied to alleged gambling violations, including thousands of bets placed while he was an active college athlete.
He has already entered a treatment facility for gambling addiction, with his eligibility, and potentially his entire college career, hanging in the balance.
That uncertainty has forced Texas Tech into immediate contingency mode.
Sorsby, one of the highest-paid players in college football, had just transferred to Texas Tech in January and was viewed as one of the marquee additions of the portal cycle.
Now, a resurfaced quote from head coach Joey McGuire is taking on new significance.
Originally delivered months ago, McGuire's comments about backup quarterback Will Hammond feel less like routine coach-speak and more like a glimpse into Texas Tech's contingency plan.
"We were smart enough to know that when Behren (Morton) left, we had our quarterback in waiting and ready to go," McGuire said.
"You have to accept the role… when it’s time for your number to be called, you have to be ready. So many people can't do that because they get frustrated-they want more, and they're not ready when called upon.”
“That's the great thing about Will Hammond. He knows exactly who he is. He knows whenever he’s called upon, then it’s time to go."
It looks like that time may be coming sooner than anyone expected.

Coming out of Hutto High School, Hammond was one of the most productive quarterbacks in the country. As a senior, he threw for 3,910 yards and 35 touchdowns while adding 1,077 rushing yards and 19 scores on the ground, delivering video-game numbers that made him a consensus four-star recruit in the 2024 class.
He committed to Texas Tech over major programs like Auburn, Oregon, Penn State, and Texas A&M, signaling early belief in McGuire's offensive system.
He also earned a spot in the prestigious Elite 11 Finals, a pipeline event for future college stars and NFL quarterbacks, and was a finalist for the Mr. Texas Football Award.
He saw action as a freshman in 2024 and frequently stepped into meaningful snaps when injuries hit starting QB Morton.
In 2025 alone, he posted 680 passing yards with seven TDs and a 131.4 passer rating, while adding 299 yards and five scores on the ground.
Then came the setback, a torn ACL in late October that ended his season just as he was gaining momentum after just starting the previous two games against Arizona State (lost 26-22) and Oklahoma State (won 42-0).

With Sorsby's status uncertain and no timetable for resolution, Hammond is no longer just a developmental piece. He's a potential QB1 on a team with legitimate championship ambitions.
The difference is massive.
Texas Tech went from building around a high-profile transfer and NFL prospect to possibly turning the keys over to a redshirt sophomore coming off a serious injury.
