Caldwell baseball finishes 32-13, earns top seed for regional tournament

Caldwell Community College & Technical Institute's baseball team won two out of three games against Surry Community College over the weekend to close out the regular season with a 32-13 record, 18-4 in Region 10 Division III play.

The Cobras' record also earns them the top seed for this weekend's National Junior College Athletic Association Mid-Atlantic District tournament in Burlington.

Friday's doubleheader at Surry saw Caldwell take the opening game by an 8-4 score. Jameson Hodges collected two RBIs in the game on 3-of-5 hitting while Jude Lyda went 2-for-4 with a double, home run and two RBIs. Daxton Savage was credited with the win on the mound, going five innings and allowing one run on six hits. Avery Strange pitched four innings, allowing three runs on seven hits. Both struck out five batters each in their appearances.

In Friday's second game, Surry jumped out to an 8-1 lead after two innings of play en route to a 12-2 mercy rule victory over Caldwell. Lyda was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Jeremiah Lowe had a solo home run.

The third game of the weekend series shifted to Walker Stadium in Lenoir on Saturday with Caldwell earning an 8-5 victory on a three-RBI walk-off home run by Lowe. The Cobras led 4-1 after the first inning, but Surry came back to tie up the game with two runs in the top of the second inning and one run in the top of the third. Surry took a 5-4 lead in the top of the ninth on a solo home run by Will Bradshaw. In the bottom of the ninth, Hodges scored from third base on a wild pitch to tie the game, setting up Lowe for the walk-off victory.
