Detroit Lions' Offense Still Ranks Among the Elite - But Barely

The Detroit Lions have some work to do following their 2025-26 season, where they round out the year at the bottom of the NFC North.

Heading into last season, the Lions’ offense was considered one of the best in the league, and now, going into the 2026-27 season, those in Detroit will be happy to see that the offense is still ranking well. But, barely.

In a Wednesday, May 6 feature for Fox Sports, Ben Arthur ranks the strongest offenses in the NFL right now.

“There’s still a long way to go before we see real football again,” he notes in the piece. “But with the NFL Draft in the books and the majority of the top-tier free agents signed, teams know what the core of their squads will look like in 2026.”

Arthur puts the Lions’ offense at No. 10, barely making the top 10 cut. Still, that’s a solid showing.

“The Lions still have one of the most talented offenses in football, but it could take a while for them to hit their stride in 2026,” he states in the feature. “Isiah Pacheco’s addition as RB2 marks a significant downgrade from David Montgomery, who was traded to the Texans.”

He adds: “Detroit has also shuffled pieces upfront to improve an offensive line that struggled last season. There’s a strong likelihood that the team will be flipping All-Pro right tackle Penei Sewell to the left side.”

My Take: Detroit Lions’ Offense Ahead of 2026-27 Season

I agree with Arthur that the Lions still have one of the most talented offenses in the league. But, the issues with this team’s offense last season is one that could haunt them again, and that’s consistency.

When Jared Goff and the Lions were on, they were on, but when the offense was having an off day, it was insurmountable. Hopefully having a new offensive coordinator in Drew Petzing will bring consistency to this roster.
