Junior Miller will try it again on Saturday at Bowman Gray Stadium

Junior Miller is going to give it another try on Saturday in the fourth week of racing at Bowman Gray Stadium.

Miller, 75, was supposed to race in John Holleman's backup car two weeks ago, but the night was rained out.

"We're going to give it another shot this week," said Miller, who has 74 career wins and ranks third behind current drivers Tim Brown (106) and Burt Myers (102).

There's little doubt that Miller is one of the legendary drivers at one of the longest NASCAR-sanctioned weekly tracks in the country.

It's been more than two years since he raced at Bowman Gray, and Saturday will be his first with the new walls. The track was renovated thanks to NASCAR and the City of Winston-Salem and the SAFER Barrier (Steel and Foam Energy Reduction Barrier) walls were installed.

"I'll see it for the first time since I drove over there a while ago," said Miller, who has made the second most starts in Modified history, trailing only current driver Randy Butner.

Miller will make his 756th, and, if all goes well, his 757th career starts on Saturday. The schedule calls for two 25-lap Modified races, something Miller is quite familiar with.

"It's all about a good draw in the second race and if you can get that, we'll see what happens," Miller said, referring to how the lineup is determined for the second race.

Miller's last win at the stadium was in 2017 when he was 66, but he didn't rule out winning again.

"I can match my age, I guess," Miller said about trying for that 75th career win. "I'm just excited to get over there and see what I can do against those boys. I've raced against a lot of them before, so they know what I'm about."

Chase Murphy disqualified

Chase Murphy's second-place finish in the Street Stock race last week was wiped off the books because he failed a tire test after the race.

NASCAR made the announcement this week and Murphy was docked 40 points and fined $400 for having altered tires.

Because of the penalty, Murphy fell into last place in the points' standings and is at minus-40 heading into Saturday's featured 50-lap race.

The adjusted points standings have Brad Lewis, who won last week's race in front of Murphy, on top with 98 points followed by Connor Keaton with 92 points and Kyler Staley with 90 points.

This week's racing

The Street Stock Division will take centerstage this week with the Steelman's Ace Hardware Street Stock 50-lap race. It's that division's longest race of the season.

There will also be two 25-lap races in the Modified Division. Besides keeping an eye on Junior Miller, who will be running on Saturday night, watch Mike Speeney and the Myers family. Speeney and Slate Myers had some words after a wreck on lap 85 last week.

There will also be two 20-lap Sportsman races and two races in the Stadium Stock Division.

Also visiting the track will be the East Coast Flathead Fords Division.

Gates will open at 6 p.m. and the first race starts at 8 p.m.
