Wake Forest mens tennis team topples Arizona to move into NCAA semifinals
The top-seeded Wake Forest men's tennis team continued its postseason run on Thursday by beating No. 8-seeded Arizona, 4-1, at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Georgia.
With the victory, the Demon Deacons (34-3) move into the national semifinals for the fifth time in program history, all coming since 2018.
"Arizona is a really tough team, and I thought our guys showed a lot of composure today," Coach Tony Bresky said. "We came out with great energy in doubles, which has been such a strength for us all season, and then we had different guys step up across the lineup in singles."
The Demon Deacons grabbed the 1-0 lead after winning two matches in doubles, then Mees Rottgering beat Filip Gustafsson 6-2, 6-1.
Showing off his depth the No. 5 and No. 6 singles players for the Demon Deacons won their matches to close out the match.
Aryan Shah beat Glib Sekachov 6-4, 6-2 and Joaquin Guilleme came back down on set to win 0-6, 7-5, 6-2.
"Mees was outstanding again, Aryan has continued to play with a ton of confidence recently and Joaquin showed tremendous fight after a tough first set," Bresky said. "To be back in the national semifinals says a lot about this group's consistency, competitiveness and belief in one another."
The Demon Deacons will play Virginia on Saturday in the semifinals at 1 p.m. The Demon Deacons beat the top-ranked Cavaliers 4-1 in Winston-Salem on March 22. They also beat them in Cary 4-2 to win the ACC championship on April 19.
