Grimsley boys win first dual team tennis title in 30 years

Grimsley boys tennis won the NCHSAA 7A boys dual team tennis state championship 5-2 over Cardinal Gibbons on Friday at the Burlington Tennis Center.

The victory gives the Whirlies its third boys team tennis state title, the others coming in 1986 and 1996. It's the school's first non-football state title since girls tennis won a dual team title in 2011.

No. 1 seed Grimsley (19-1) clinched the match over Gibbons (18-6) with Kadin Lineberger/Cooper Boyland winning its No. 3 doubles match, 8-2, over William Beam/Deuce Coles, making the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles matches unnecessary.

The Whirlies ended the season on a six-match winning streak after losing 6-3 to Green Level on April 14. During the postseason, it defeated 17-seed Southwest Guilford 6-0 in the second round on April 28; 9-seed Weddington 5-2 in the third round on May 4; 4-seed Davie County 5-0 in the fourth round on May 6; and 7-seed Marvin Ridge 5-4 in the West regional final.

Senior Yash Nain, the Whirlies' No. 1 player, was named MVP after a season in which he went 16-5 in singles and 10-2 in doubles.

The dual team title comes days after the program's combination of sophomore Jai Rao and freshman Gareth Lim won the 7A individual doubles state title last weekend.
