Caitlin Clark Will Not Announce Which Team She Wants To Win NBA Finals
We saw what the people of New York City were willing to say to Elmo (yes, the Sesame Street character) for riding the fence about his NBA Finals pick. What will the fans say about WNBA superstar Caitlin Clark when she refuses to pick a side?
The answer is probably the same thing, but that won't stop her from declaring herself "indifferent" to who hoists the Larry O'Brien trophy between the Spurs and the Knicks.
Speaking to the media on Saturday ahead of an evening game against the New York Liberty, Clark was naturally asked who she's rooting for. But Clark said she's less concerned about who wins and more eager to see seven games worth of competitive hoops from both sides.
"I'm kind of indifferent on who wins, but I'm just such a basketball fan that I would love to see it go to seven games just because I love it," Clark said, via APNews.com. "I think it's been such a great series, and even the Spurs beating the Thunder I think was incredible, too. I'm a fan and I think even watching like you can learn so much so I try to absorb as much as I can."
Clark was out in Manhattan with her teammate Lexie Hull during Game 2 and tuned into the game - as well as the postgame celebrations. She admitted that she admired the devotion that the basketball fans have for the Knicks and hopes to experience it for herself one day.
"They're like jumping around on each other and climbing light poles. I feel like that would be an experience," she said. "I don't know if my security guy would let me do that, but I want to. I want to experience that because those Knicks fans are so passionate and crazy, I admired. It's pretty awesome."
Kings of New York
Caitlin Clark may be the most popular player in the WNBA (and perhaps all of WNBA history), but it's doubtful that even if she played for the Liberty and led them to a title that fans would be as wild and crazy out on the streets of New York as they are for the Knicks.
Simply put, the Knicks ARE New York basketball and the fans are demonstrating a level of fanaticism that we truly haven't seen in American sports, let alone New York sports, at almost any level ever.
Now that they're 2-0 with the next two games at Madison Square Garden, things might only get crazier if the Knicks keep up their winning ways.
