Lenoir-Rhyne baseball's Procopio selected as All-American, one of 3 LR players to make all-region
Matt Procopio became just the sixth All-American in Lenoir-Rhyne baseball history after being named to the NCBWA All-America third team.
Procopio joins Mackenzie Wainwright, Cole Stanford, Sal Carricato, Josh Lanham and Dan Ford as the only All-Americans in program history.
Procopio and Mackenzie Wainwright were also named to the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) All-Southeast Region team. They were joined by Kellen Gradisar on the D2CCA All-Southeast Region team. Procopio was a first team honoree on that one while Gradisar and Wainwright were each named to the second team.
Procopio finished the season with a .436 batting average, which ranks No. 12 in the country and is the fifth-best mark in program history. He tied for the team lead with 78 hits and was the solo leader with 60 RBIs. On March 21 against Coker, Procopio tied the school record with three home runs in a game. The senior scored 48 runs, hit 15 doubles, one triple, eight home runs, had 16 walks, and was struck out just 12 times throughout the year. The primary shortstop throughout the season, he led the team with 115 assists in the field.
Wainwright, last year's regional player of the year, hit .406 this year with 78 hits, 59 RBIs, 39 walks, 18 doubles, and 14 home runs. His .750 slugging percentage was fifth all-time in LR history. In just two years, he ranks first in career batting average, first in slugging percentage, second in home runs, second in on-base percentage, fourth in triples, sixth in runs scored and sixth in total bases.
It was Gradisar's first appearance on an all-region team. The junior hurler led the Bears with a 2.99 ERA and finished the year with an 8-3 record. In his final two starts, he didn't allow a run. His six complete games ranks second in DII.
